Questions, answered.

How are charity websites scored?

Each site is scored out of 100. Speed is worth 30 points, from Google's mobile performance score, because slow pages lose visitors. Accessibility checks are worth 30, from Google's automated accessibility audit, because the Equality Act 2010 asks charities to make their services usable by everyone. Donations are worth 25: a working donate route, on the charity's own site or through a service such as JustGiving, scores in full, and a donate link we could not confirm scores 15. Search basics are worth 15, from Google's SEO audit, because the first thing a supporter does is search. Sites with the same score are ordered by how fast their main content appears on a phone.

Does a high accessibility score mean a site meets WCAG?

No. An automated check finds some barriers, such as missing image descriptions and low contrast text, but not all of them. A high score is a good sign, not a WCAG pass. The free website MOT lists the barriers we found on each site.

Why is my charity not in the league?

We only rank sites we could check properly. A site is left out while we have not tested it yet, when we could not reach it, when it blocks automated checks, when we could not read its content (a holding page, for example), when it is not served securely over HTTPS, when its web address sends visitors to a different site, or when several charities share one page. How do I get my charity ranked, retested or removed?

Find your charity above. If it is not ranked yet you can ask us to rank it, and if it is ranked you can ask for a retest, which usually finishes within a day. To be removed, email us at hello@nexusstudio.io and we will take the charity off the league and close its report link.

What makes a good charity website?

A good charity website loads quickly on a phone, works for everyone including people using screen readers, makes it easy to donate, and can be found when supporters search for the charity. It should also say clearly what the charity does and who it helps. The free website MOT checks each of these for your charity and explains what to fix first.

Where does this information come from?

Charity names, numbers and web addresses come from the Charity Commission register, under the Open Government Licence v3.0. The scores come from our own tests: Google PageSpeed Insights on a simulated phone, and a light check of each home page. We never publish the email addresses or social links our checks find.
